Apple Calendar is free, already on every iPhone in the house, and Family Sharing hands you a shared Family calendar the day you set it up. Plannie reads those iCloud calendars as a feed and adds what a household needs on top: a colour per person, chores, meals, a kitchen display, and an app that works on Android too.

Three things that matter on a Tuesday
What Apple gives you for nothing. Set up Family Sharing and a shared Family calendar and a Family reminder list appear in everyone’s apps without a download or a new account to create. Each child has a real Apple Account with Screen Time and Ask to Buy, and Siri will offer to add the flight or the restaurant booking it spotted in Mail. On an iPhone 16, point the camera at a poster and iOS 26 suggests the event. That is a good free calendar, and Plannie does not pretend otherwise.
What one shared calendar can’t show. The Family calendar has one colour, so a Tuesday with football, a dentist and a late meeting reads as three identical blocks. Per-person colours mean every member building and sharing a calendar of their own. There is no chore chart, meal grid, wall mode or Android app, so the parent on a Pixel or the cheap tablet by the fridge is outside the loop. Plannie starts from the shared view: everyone’s days side by side in their own colour, chores that pay out in tickets, the week’s dinners in one grid, kiosk mode on any tablet and personal mode on each phone.
How they fit together. Plannie subscribes to your iCloud calendars as a feed, so what is already in Apple Calendar shows up in the family view and stays current. The limit is that events created in Plannie do not write back to Apple Calendar. They sync to your default Google or Outlook calendar if you have one, and otherwise they live in Plannie, where the Family Inbox files a forwarded school PDF under the right child and the open API lets your own agent read the week.
Choose Apple Calendar if…
Everyone in the house is on an iPhone, shared events are all the coordination you need, and child accounts with Screen Time matter more to you than chores or meals. It is free, private and already installed.
Choose Plannie if…
You want a colour for each person, chores and rewards, a weekly meal plan and a kitchen tablet that shows the whole family, on Android and in a browser as well as on iPhone. Keep Apple Calendar for your own events; Plannie reads it and adds the household on top for $99/year.

For an all-Apple household that only needs shared events, often yes, and it costs nothing. Does Plannie sync with Apple Calendar or iCloud?+
One way. Plannie subscribes to your iCloud calendars as a feed and keeps them current, so what is already in Apple Calendar shows up in the family view next to everyone else. Events you create in Plannie stay in Plannie, and in your Google or Outlook calendar if that is your default. They do not write back to Apple Calendar, because Apple has no public API comparable to Google’s or Microsoft’s.
