Where the two part ways
Notion is a workspace. It has no idea what a family is until you tell it, and the telling is the work: a Family Hub template, a chores database, a meal planner, each with its own properties and views, each maintained by whoever in the house likes maintaining things. Done well it is impressive. Done by a tired parent on a Sunday night it is a page nobody opens by Wednesday.
Plannie starts with the household drawn in. Each member has a colour, and every view puts their days side by side. Google and Outlook sync both ways, iCloud comes in as a feed, and an event created on the kitchen tablet lands in your own calendar too. Notion Calendar is a fine calendar client, but it sits beside the workspace rather than inside it, per-person colours aren't documented, and Notion's own help pages say Google events can't yet be imported into a database.
Then the parts a database won't give you: a chore that pays out tickets a child spends on rewards, a meal grid that turns a recipe link into ingredients on the grocery list, an inbox that reads a school PDF and files the dates under the right child, and a tablet in kiosk mode showing everyone's day. Plannie's own gap is real too. It is not a place for documents or projects, and Notion is.
Choose Notion if…
You want one workspace for everything, documents and projects included, and you enjoy building the family hub yourself from templates. Nobody in it is 13 or younger, and you're fine with $10 per member per month on Plus, or one paid seat and free guests.
Choose Plannie if…
You want the family calendar, chores, meals and lists working on the first evening, with a colour for each member and a child's chores on the kitchen tablet. You want school paperwork read for you and two-way sync with Google and Outlook, and one $99/year price for the whole household instead of a seat per person.

Is a Notion family hub as good as a family calendar app?+
It can be, if someone in the house enjoys building it. The free Family Hub template gives you pages for a calendar database, chores and meals, and Notion Calendar lays Google, iCloud and Outlook events next to your database dates. Nothing in it is built for families: it has no per-member colours, rewards for kids or kiosk mode, and Notion's terms bar anyone 13 or younger. Plannie has all of that on the day you sign up.
Can Notion Calendar be a shared family calendar?+
Partly. Each person connects their own Google, iCloud or Outlook accounts (up to five calendars) and sees them alongside Notion database items, and a shared family calendar exists only if you already share one in Google, iCloud or Outlook. Notion's help pages say importing Google Calendar events into a database is 'not yet possible'. Plannie's calendar is the shared one: every member's events in their colour, two-way with Google and Outlook.
