The differences that matter
The two have more in common than most pairs here. Both have an open API and an MCP server for your own agents, and both read a forwarded email. They differ in what they are built on. Todoist is a task list with a calendar layout on Pro, and external events appear read-only in two views, with one provider per person and no colours. Plannie is a calendar first, with everyone's days side by side and edits flowing both ways to Google and Outlook.
A Todoist chore is a recurring task with one assignee, and the completed-task history shows who did it. That is fine for adults. Plannie's chores pay tickets that kids trade for rewards, the meal grid plans the week's dinners with the ingredients dropping onto the grocery list, and kiosk mode turns the tablet on the wall into the family display. None of that has a Todoist equivalent.
On price, Todoist has no family plan and its own help centre says app-store family sharing isn't supported for Pro. Four people on Pro is $240 a year. Plannie Premium is $99 a year for the whole household, or $159 with the agent API and MCP, and the free plan already has the shared calendar with sync.

Is Todoist good for families?+
It is a very good shared to-do list. The free Beginner plan lets you share a personal project with up to five people, assign tasks (one person per task), set recurring due dates and see who completed what. Todoist itself suggests using it for the kids' chores and the grocery list. It has no family calendar of its own, no rewards for kids, no meal planning and no family plan, and accounts are for ages 13 and up.
Does Todoist have a family calendar?+
Not really. Pro and Business get a calendar layout of your tasks, and Google or Outlook events show up read-only in the Today and Upcoming views only. Each person connects one provider to their own account, there is no colour per member and you can't edit an event inside Todoist. Can Todoist turn an email into a task like Plannie's Family Inbox?+
Yes, on Pro and Business. Email Assist reads a forwarded email and creates a task with a due date and notes. Photos, PDFs and attachments aren't documented. Plannie's Family Inbox gives the household its own email address, and the Plannie Assistant reads the email, the schedule PDF or a photo of the flyer and files events and tasks under the right child, with everything it adds marked and reviewable.
